Tragedy and just plain luck in Dominical accidents

Today down along the coast, near Dominical, there were a couple of car accidents. The first one pictured here was, I'm sure a life changing moment, for a man who veered off the road and luckily...landed on a steel beam running parallel to the small bridge. The man with the yellow shirt in the distance was the lucky driver of the vehicle. Talk about thanking your lucky stars on this one.

The second accident further along the same road was far more tragic whereas it is being reported that four people were killed when this car also veered off the highway however this one tumbled completely to the bottom to the river bed below. Some 25 meters below the highway.

Accidents are common along this highway as many drive this road at high speed thinking that because the asphalt is so new and clean of the usual potholes throughout the rest of the country, they don't have 'other' obstacles to contend with. Anyone driving this highway with any frequency will tell you that there are loads of hazards to be aware of including large truck drivers that have no concept of driving in their own lanes, drunk drivers, wildlife, fallen trees, washouts and many more. It has been said that the leading cause of death in Costa Rica is due in some respect, to the roadways. There has been much written about the conditions of the roadways and driving hazards throughout Costa Rica, on this blog before.
