The smoking ban is already a reality.

But this almost did not materialize.

Ten deputies sent the bill to the Constitutional Court but the justices did not notify the Assembly of that request.

That allowed that only 45 deputies approve the smoking ban in bars, restaurants and offices.

Nor can anyone sell loose cigarettes and a pack cost 20¢ more.

The ten deputies tried to stop the passage of the bill insisting that the increase in the cost of a pack of cigarettes encourage smuggling.

Fines of 180 000 colones (about $360) to merchants who sell cigarettes in singles. Costa Rica joins the list of 50 countries that ban smoking in public places.

These include China, Brazil, Argentina and 11 European countries.
