Guanacaste: Where’s The Beef?
With the rise in popularity for processed, low cost beef products in the 50s and 60s, Guanacaste became a hot spot for providing beef to the many fast food joints of North America including Wendy’s, McDonald’s and Burger King to name a few.
With the meat being absorbed by the fast food chains, this left another market with the leather and fat products to be sold to neighboring Panama for large profits.
In the 90s this industry began to slow slightly for Guanacaste ranchers whereas opportunistic farm owners were focusing on the short term gains of Guanacaste real estate and the massive influx of property developers lurking around every corner.
These days, although the spirit remains, for the most part Guanacaste has quickly become the tourism gold mine for Costa Rica.
Another up and coming industry is the Costa Rica medical tourism sector. And who’s right there waiting to host the lion’s share of medical tourists coming to the country? That’s right…Guanacaste.
Two of the country’s leading private hospitals, CIMA and Clinica Biblica, have announced, and in CIMAs case opened, plans for full service hospitals in the region around Liberia the capital of the Guanacaste province.
With the recent renovation of the Costa Rica airport, Liberia International, the airport now has the capabilities of increased arrival processing by almost triple what it was last year. This is great news for businesses throughout the area that rely on the Guanacaste tourism to survive.
Now although Guanacaste real estate is at a high, the spirit of the Guanacaste cattle ranchers remain – almost every small community has yearly rodeos and parades priding themselves on their grass roots Guanacaste cowboy heritage.
