iPhone Manufacturing Considered “Unfair” in Costa Rica
Do you like the iPhone? its curved edges? and its delicate screen? Well, if of the labor laws of Costa Rica depend it, the Apple smartphone could not be produced.
The iPhone is manufactured under conditions that are prohibited by the Costa Rican legislation, the U.S. and most Western democracies.
Apple released a few days ago a report on labor conditions in its 156 suppliers, many of which operate in Asia, especially China.
The overall result is that 38% of providers violates the rules of Apple. These rules allow conditions that would be prohibited in Costa Rican territory.
For example, several suppliers of Apple are violating the maximum working hours 60 per week. In contrast, in Costa Rica this limit is 48 hours.
In addition, in 108 plants were detected that are not paid overtime.
After the publication of its report, Apple said it would join the Fair Labor Association and undertake to monitor the conditions of staff employed by its suppliers.
