Labor groups announced yesterday the first protests against the wage increase of ¢ 5,000 for the public sector, announced Friday by the Government.

The first manifestation, called by the Union of Education Workers (SEC), is scheduled for January 19, at 10 a. m., opposite the Presidential Palace.

Subsequently, there will be a picket outside the Ministry of Labour and Social Security on Wednesday, January 25, at 2 p. m.

The latter was defined on Monday during a general assembly with the participation of the unions that represent the committee of public sector wages.

Alexander Ovares, president of the National Association of Educators (ANDE), said the workers claim the limited openness of the state to negotiate.

The decision came after two failed attempts to negotiate the issue with the state.

For her part, the Minister of Labour, Sandra Piszk, called for “further reflection” by the representatives of the union leaders.
